Dental Ruin The Fifth Chapter of Our Tale
I genuinely consider Chapter 5 to be one of the best Chapters up there with Chapter 4. While I fundamentally understand why people are disappointed, because this is more waiting, there is also a sort of... hm, to me. Not that things I love can't be flawed or immune to criticism. Everything has flaws. I uh, consider. The fights overtuned. Secret Boss was neat but had zero foreshadowing throughout the chapter and I really wish it was like.... better integrated.
Deltarune unfortunately suffers from three bad things One is hype. Second is the fact it is divided in parts and there was a massive delay (i believe this created this weird pacing of these last three chapters). Third is the sedimentation of the lore and theorycrafting.
As someone who had come to enjoy a different media "laterally" in that most of my attachment is unexplored side characters and side content and potential I am not blind to the idea that a lot of enjoyment is not from a thing itself, but from community/making stuff about it. One still loves the thing but attaches themselves more to the idea of thing rather than the thing itself. Not to mention, the pressure valve of waiting making hits or misses matter more.
And I don't want to say people can't say yea this doesn't reach my heart. Is it weird if it did mine? And I can see why people are disappointed. Like I don't want to be a dickhead that says "you expected too much". Because ... sometimes experiences don't hit, sometimes what gives you dopamine is not the thing itself but something around it and honestly even not enjoying something is valuable info. And it sucks being dismissed. But is it weird I want to say I loved this chapter, without being accused of dick-riding?
I don't know. Am I just old and out of touch. Like I don't give a fuck about FRIEND when I had a blast and had my soul uplifted while enjoying the genuine feelings of cracks in foundation of happy adventure as previous revelations shattered it. Thematically, it was also interesting in many ways. I suppose I didn't care about learning more lore, and simply experiencing. For me there is no no need to rush and forcefully break out every revelation. Only time will tell if this is naive and the pacing was legit awful. What I wanted was to understand the world of Deltarune and experience whatever it could gave me and it overdelivered in many ways.
